Croatan Beach
South of the Rudee Inlet is the stunning Croatan Beach. This beach is optimal for those families who are looking for more of a quiet experience for the day. With designated surfing areas, this beach is also excellent for surfers and those who like to swim in the water. Here, you will always be able to find a lifeguard along the entire ¾-mile-long beach with a public parking lot with access at the south end. If anyone in your family is a little adventurous and wants to take on some surfing, you can sign up for summer surf lessons with an experienced surfer!
First Landing Beach
First Landing Beach is located at the northernmost point of First Landing State Park. With one and a half miles of sandy beach to explore, you and your family can enjoy this secluded beach far from most tourists. Something to keep in mind is that of the beaches in Virginia Beach, this one does not have any lifeguards on duty. With a calmer surf, this spot is excellent for those with younger family members. If you aren’t into the typical beach day, you can experience hiking and bike riding on over 22 miles of trails and biking pathways. This beach costs about $4 per car on weekdays and about $5 on weekends.
Little Island Park
Little Island Park is a 122-acre beach park situated in Sandbridge Beach. This large beach, north of the 400ft fishing pier, allows guarded swimming outside the surfing areas and away from the pier. If you are looking for something other than swimming and building sand castles, you can opt for some time spent fishing or taking advantage of other amenities. Just there in the beach area is a canoe and kayak launch area on Back Bay. Your family can check out many of these items with a driver’s license. In addition, if you have younger ones, you can pay a visit to the large playground of slides, climbing walls, ladders, and monkey bars!
Chesapeake Bay Beach
The Chesapeake Bay Beach rests on a little over two miles of sand. It is located in the Lynnhaven Inlet to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, making it easily accessible to visitors. This beach is known for its very calm waters, so it’s great for swimming and floating around in a floatie. You can also bring a paddleboard or kiteboard with you to use. Chesapeake Bay Beach is located near many restaurants and bars, making it super convenient. Parking is restricted here, but you can find paid parking near the Lynnhaven boat ramp and First Landing State Park.
The Oceanfront
Oceanfront Beach is located in a more tourist-centered area and is one of the more popular beaches in Virginia Beach. With an array of many restaurants, fun nightlife, and entertainment galore, there is something to do and see for everyone in the family. In addition, the beach is home to a beautiful three-mile boardwalk where you and your family can lounge, walk, or fish. The beach is also adjacent to many hotels, so that you can book a staycation in the area for a few days. You can also sign up for surf lessons and rent bikes to ride along the beach during the summertime. There is also free 2-hour parking on the western side of Atlantic Avenue for easy access.
Grommet Island Park
Grommet Island Park is a 15,000-square-foot park. Out of the beaches in Virginia Beach, this is the most accessible for little ones and those who are handicapped. The playground is accessible for everyone and features a sensory board and raised sand tables. Regarding accessibility, Grommet Island also offers complimentary beach wheelchairs to whoever needs them during the day. Beach chairs for everyone else are available from April 1st through October 1st, and the beach also features public restrooms!
